Mahala Market 2 – Shongweni community

After the success of last year’s Mahala Market, we have decided to do at least two more in 2018! We are so grateful to our community for your amazing support in donating your pre-loved clothing for the first of our 2018 Mahala Markets. It was hosted today at Shongweni Dam for nearly 300 Gogos and Mkulus! Our Chairlady’s vision came to life again as the aim of this ‘Market’ is to allow the Gogos in the community to shop for free and choose whatever they wished and FILL their big bags with clothes, linen, toiletries, shoes, sanitary wear, nappies, accessories for themselves as well as take home a small hamper of groceries for their families. They get by on so little with their state pensions, and in 9 out of 10 cases, they also have grandchildren in their care due to the rising stats of orphans and vulnerable children because of HIV/AIDS. What an exciting day for them! Our most grateful thanks to the Christian Social Services, our community liaison in the Shongweni community, for your support in ensuring all the Gogos and Mkulus arrived safely and on time, and CHEP for your generous sponsorship which allowed us to hire the marquee, serve our guests tea, coffee and snacks. This also helped us to bring Qadasi & Maqhinga to come and perform LIVE which completely raised the energy at the event. Thanks to Runga Trans for your wonderful donation of a truck and driver to cart ALL 8 tons to the hall, the INCREDIBLE team of volunteers who helped serve today, as well as those that have helped pack and sort tirelessly for the past 3 months in preparation for the event. Last but not least, we would like to thank every single person that donated items towards this market. The smiles and joy created here today were incredible and greatly uplifted the lives of the these elderly Gogos and Mkulus we served, giving them hope as well as a bit of relief which is a blessing for them! #MahalaMarket2018
