Chicken Stew For The Soul – EMBO 20 July 2017

Chicken Stew For The Soul – EMBO 20 July 2017

After the incredible success and joy of our ‘Soulfood’ soup kitchen in August last year, which saw us feed over 5000 people, today we host another “soup kitchen”. Serving nearly 250 Gogos and Mkulus – as well as some kiddies – a hot, freshly cooked sit down meal thanks to Eat Greek Caterers, with LIVE entertainment by local artist Rene Tshiakanyi. A massive thank you to Merlog Foods for donating all the chicken and vegetables and Eat Greek Caterers for cooking up nearly 600 litres of nutritional stew, as well as Pailpac for donating all the hundreds of 2 litre buckets for the ‘take home stew’ and KEY Durban and Albany Breads for the 200 loaves of bread they’ve donated for the Gogo’s to take home as well. And our grateful thanks to the team at ARB Electrical for help in packing all the big, heavy Gogo bags as well as the incredible team from Gastrek for donating your truck to cart all the bags to the hall! We finished the luncheon with some tea and some freshly baked cakes for these elderly hearts. Why EMBO? These are some of the oldest and frailest Gogo’s and Mkulu’s we meet in our outreaches. Carol Eve Schroeder from Twinkle Star Foundation feeds about 100 of Gogos and Mkulus every Thursday, this is a lifeline to them! We have partnered with Carol for many years in the EMBO community and would love to bless these elderly folk, who have spent their lives in service, by serving them a delicious and nutritious hot meal, to sit and just enjoy the love and service the volunteers joining us have to offer. With Mandela Day earlier this week, we always try to do more than #67minutes and over the years have hosted what we like to call ‘Mandela Remembrance week’ and thought what better time to provide a fully catered, sit down lunch and tea for these elderly folk and send them off with supplies of food, clothes and blankets for the families they care for on their meagre pension. What a truly Soul-Filling day! Beautiful music by Rene Tshiakanyi, restaurant event style set up and joined by some amazing volunteers and some wonderful community hearts from Highway Mail as well as the phenomenal Bongani, Zinhle and team from Eat Greek Caterers – the event was a beautiful success! The 250 we fed, PLUS the food in Gogo bags, bread and a further 2 litre stew to take home sees over 1000 people with full happy tummies day. Thank you to each and every person that gave time, clothes, food and all support towards helping us to make today such a special day to bless these elderly folk! Imagine a hall filled with so many people – singing our National Anthem in all 3 languages!! Unity, respect and love shared here today! #chickenstewforthesoul #robinhoodfoundation #makeadifference
