The Love the Babies Project is the first project that led to the formation of the Robin Hood Foundation. Through this project, needy mums from AIDS affected communities are given a ‘Love the Babies’ Bag for the first year of their new baby’s life. Essentially a baby shower in a bag, the ‘Love the Babies’ Bags are always so well-received by the needy mums who we donate to.
Included in these bags are towelling nappies, disposable nappies, second hand and new baby clothes, booties, hats, bibs, blankets, towels, toys and teddies. If we receive sufficient donations, special items are occasionally included, such as aqueous cream, baby shampoo or powder.
At the Robin Hood Foundation we are concerned by the huge disparity in society. On the one side of town, new mums have cupboards bulging with an abundance of baby clothes that they don’t need while on the other, needy mums give birth to children without so much as an outfit to put on their newborn. We would like to see an end to the horror stories of new mums taking their babies home from hospital wrapped in newspaper.
To date, more 16 000 ‘Love the Babies’ Bags have been handed out in the greater Durban area, at St Mary’s Hospital, King Edward Hospital, Addington Hospital, Prince Myshiyeni Memorial and Inchanga Clinic, as well as at various churches, pregnancy crisis centres and to concerned individuals. The Love the Babies Project aims to help 100 new mums every month and in order to do this, we need a continuous supply of baby items.
Each ‘Love the Babies’ bag contains the following items:
- Newborn outfit
- 1-3 Month outfit
- 3-6 Month outfit
- 6-12 Month outfit
